Formula Recipe Calculators

Nutrition care done smarter.
Save time and avoid mistakes calculating customized formula and feeding plans.

Creating higher calorie recipes with formula or breastmilk is a very common nutrition intervention for babies and young children. Across the country, busy pediatric providers like you collectively spend hundreds of hours collating powdered formula data. Why repeat the work of others?

The next challenge – manually calculating accurate recipes that don’t waste expensive formula and meets your patient’s unique needs.

The Formula Sense calculators can help.

The calculators can help you……

  • Using the standard equations pediatric dietitians, this calculator displays the estimated caloric needs based on your patient’s weight, length, age, and sex.

Both estimated standard needs and catch-up needs are displayed, so you can assess for gaps. Daily protein and fluid needs are also provided.

Use this as a starting point for your assessment keeping in mind that medical conditions can change the utility of these general estimates.

  • An Intake Estimation Tool displays the total volume (oz) of a hypercaloric formula need needed to meet the estimated catch-up needs for your patient.

Effortlessly, you can view the goal intake needed for formulas that are 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30 calorie per ounces. Compare them to your patient’s caloric needs and feeding abilities or tolerance.

  • Once you have decided on the desired caloric density, you can start building your recipe. (Or perhaps recipes if you want more than one batch size.)

Select the formula from database, which contains over 100 powdered formula (virtually any product a US family may use). Enter scoop and water volumes until you have a recipe with the desired caloric density and total volume.

Write the recipe to provide to your patient or print out the handout for them to take home.

  • Although formula is in the name, Formula Sense also helps you support your breastfeeding families. You can also build breastmilk fortification recipes using any formula in the database.

Select the formula from database and enter scoop and breastmilk volumes until you have a recipe with the desired caloric density and total volume.

  • Sometimes the recipes that caregivers tell you, aren’t what you are expecting. Quickly and easily check any powdered formula recipe by putting it into the calculator.

  • Modifying formula recipes changes not only macronutrients, but micronutrients too.
The recipe calculators provide you with a break down for 6 keys nutrients to help you identify deficiencies and excess intakes.

    Nutrients include:

    • Iron

    • Sodium

    • Potassium

    • Calcium

    • Phosphorus

    • Vitamin D

One day I made a calculation mistake. Not a big one (no one was hurt), but a mistake. I knew exactly why it happened. But that didn’t help. I knew I needed a new process, one that was not only less vulnerable to errors, but also more efficient. Recipe calculation took up too much of my time and mental space.

With my background in evaluation and improvement, I knew that technology could help. So, I built my first formula recipe calculator.

Using it daily, I discovered something else – more quality time with families and a better ability to meet their needs.
