What is Calcium Glycerophosphate?

[pronounced: kal-cee-um  gli-sa-rol-fas-fate  |  kal-sē-əm gli-sə-ˌrȯl-fäs-ˌfāt]

While its name is long, its purpose is short. Calcium glycerophosphate provides the minerals calcium and phosphorus and is another form of calcium phosphate, which is explained here. Please read that post for details on why calcium and phosphorus are important for infant health.

Emerging Uses

Calcium glycerophosphate is being used in toothpaste because it appears to prevent cavities and support healthy tooth enamel. One interesting study out of Brazil, showed that oral wipes with either fluoride or calcium glycerophosphate protected infant tooth enamel. Oral wipes would be particularly helpful for infants and children with special needs when tooth brushing is difficult or not possible.

Formula Sense associates will continue to track the use of this ingredient in infant foods and update readers!
